MALAKEY  ~2 years old.  Good with older considerate children and dogs with slow introductions.  Needs a companion animal. Not good with cats.

Sometimes you meet a dog that is so shut down that you just want to give them a hug and tell them everything will be OK. Sweet little Malakey is one of those dogs. Malakey had a rough start to her life. She was one of the dogs seized in a puppy mill raid. Malakey had spent her entire short life locked in a 3x10 enclosure with no gate, with very little human interaction or stimulus of any kind. She was in a chain link cell basically. GSRA stepped in to help, as we felt Malakey needed a chance to see what life is all about and find a family to love her.

Malakey is a petite little Belgian Malinois. She has gorgeous coloring, and is only 47 pounds. Malakey is about 2 yrs old, and just starting to learn what it means to be a dog. Malakey is sweet and timid. She is easily startled by loud noises or sudden movements. She is slowly coming out of her shell, and it will continue to be an ongoing process for her. Malakey is curious about many things around her, and you can see her analyzing "new" things that she is exposed to. Malakey has recently "discovered" the tennis balls and rope toys. It is a joy to watch her play with toys, as her eyes light up and she acts like a puppy! Malakey also takes a while to warm up to people, and is more fearful of men than women. However, she also has a strong food drive, and can usually be bribed with yummy treats....she likes hot dog slices and chicken!! (Dog biscuits are good, but if she is nervous they don't have the "magic" appeal). Malakey likes to be near her people....she is very calm in the house. She will not be right beside you, but likes to stay in the same room and just lay down or play with one of her toys. Once she gets to trust you, she will eagerly roll over for belly rubs, and will bat your hands with her paws. I think over time, and with a patient owner, Malakey will become more affectionate and interactive. She is a blank slate right now, and slowly learning many behaviors that most dogs learn when they are puppies. Malakey is also a very quiet dog for the most part. Malakey is crate trained, and will rest quietly in her crate. I think she feels it is her safe spot. Malakey also rides fabulously in the car! I have been taking her to work to get her exposed to more people and sounds, and she eagerly hops into the SUV in the mornings!

Malakey seems unsure of how to interact with dogs (once again, she has not had any exposure except for through a fence). She is fine as long as they keep their distance, but can be a bit fear reactive if they get too close to her face. I have walked her around with one of my calmer dogs, and once she spends a bit of time with a dog, she seems to relax. I feel her behavior is more defensive in nature, and that with proper introductions and controlled interactions, she could probably learn to get along well with other dogs. Malakey walks great on a leash. She also takes verbal corrections very well.

Malakey is a diamond in the rough. She needs a patient family who is committed to work with her to build her confidence, and continue her journey of learning to be a dog. She will be well worth the effort, and will be a most devoted companion! Malakey may have started off under less than favorable circumstances, but I know she has the potential to learn, and will develop into a fabulous dog! She just needs to gain confidence.
