German Shepherd Dog (medium coat) : : Male (neutered) : : Adult
~1-2 years old. Good with older considerate children and dogs. Not good with cats. Needs a companion animal. Are you looking for a dog to laugh with? One who will adore you forever and keep you in stitches even when he’s being “devilish”? Well King is the man for you, he is a 1-2 year old male we rescued from a local shelter. King didn’t quite get off on the right foot with us, the first foster home he was in had a 12 year old female dog that King didn't see eye to eye with so we moved him. Well a few good corrections to let him know what was and wasn't acceptable and he’s turned into a great boy. He still needs work, don’t get me wrong he’s not perfect but he is truly a “diamond in the rough”. The poor boy eats like he’s afraid he won’t see food ever again which will hopefully change over time, the good part is that he’s food motivated so he should be easy to obedience train. He also likes to play rough and can be very vocal (barking or “play growling” ) with the other dogs which can sometimes cause tension until the other dog knows that it’s just the way he plays so he’ll need good introductions and supervision when meeting new dogs. King probably never had a human or canine in his life before to show him the ropes so he made things up as he went along. He is extremely playful though and would need a playful canine companion or he might drive his humans crazy. This is where the comedian part comes in, if you don’t exercise King a lot or he can’t expend his energy playing with other dogs, well, he’s like an only child, he’ll find things to do. He loves to carry his food bowl (or any food bowl really) around the house, he loves to chew and will find things to chew (don’t drop anything and if you do be quick to pick it up!), some of his favorites are plastic bottle, blankets, towels, clothes, well almost anything he can find really (don’t worry, he doesn’t seem too into couches or major furniture). We keep a good supply of hooves and toys around for him to chew and that helps a lot. He can also be mouthy at times, especially when he wants attention or wants you t o play with him. We see this in shepherds from time to time, nothing unusual just some like to mouth your hand, leg etc and some don’t. In fact he loves to try and grab my legs when I get out of bed in the morning, I have to remind him my legs aren’t chew toys and he’ll eventually get it, he’s just excited that you’re awake and gets a little carried away. Like I said he’s very playful, having a dad who could rough-house with him would make King’s day. He also makes sure you know when he wants attention, he’ll put that snout under your arm and toss it in the air like “hey, wat'cyah doing? Pay attention to me!!” He loves to be rubbed and petted by his humans and can be so sweet and gentle when he wants to be. Because of his rambunctious behavior and “mouthiness” I wouldn’t recommend him being around very small children all the time unless you’ve had Shepherds and understand their behavior. He also really needs a good leader and someone to take him to obedience training. I have not cat tested him but I personally think he would be too rough with a cat. King is up to date on his vaccines and neutered but unfortunately he is heartworm positive. The rescue will treat him and he’s not displaying any symptoms at all. King is house and crate trained but will bark when he’s first left in a crate so no apartments or condos for this guy. A nice fenced in yard for him to run in would be a huge plus, unless you need a running partner and can exercise him a couple times a day, and no, casual walks aren’t going to be enough for this guy, he needs to RUN!! (as you can see in the pics) King rides in a car well but like I said he needs some basic obedience, some leash work (he pulls and wanders), and a little patience but I promise this guy will worm his way into your heart before you know it!
