German Shepherd Dog (long coat) : : Male (neutered) : : Senior : : Large
~6 years old. Good with kids and dogs. Cats TBD. Good for seniors/elderly. Needs companion animal
Hello! I would like to introduce you to one of our newest senior GSD's. His name is Berrin (fka Tucker), German for "like a bear", and he is approximately six years old. All long haired GSD's need a German name :-). Berrin was found wandering the streets in South Carolina. He spent a month in the shelter, and on the last day of his life, was pulled out quickly by GSRA. He is an absolutely stunning, long haired, black and red GSD. He is a noble gentleman who will steal your heart!
Berrin was very emaciated and needed to put on about 25 lbs when he entered rescue. He has already put on 10 lbs. He has HUGE feet and a good sized frame, and should top out around 85 lbs. His long hair hides his bones well, but when he came to me, you could feel the shape of each bone in his body. He does love to eat though, which will make gaining weight that much easier. Since he was out on the street for a while, or not fed by his prior owners, he does like to sniff the counters when he walks by. Even though he has not taken anything off the counters, I would not leave food out to tempt him. I have very little doubt that he would counter surf if given the chance, so when he walks by sniffing, we tell him to leave it. Even though he is emaciated and probably had to scrounge for his food for survival, he takes treats extremely gently.
This boy is one of the most gentle GSD's that I have ever had the pleasure of fostering. He has such a sweet nature and is a true joy to have around. He is great with people and children, good with dogs, and cats are TBD. He does not exemplify the stereotypical GSD with their aloofness to strangers, quite the opposite. He will approach you with a wagging tail and the softest eyes. He does alert you to strangers outside the home, and has that nice deep bark that GSD's are known for. Berrin corrects very easily and does not need a firm voice command. He is a very sensitive soul that I sense has been abused in the past. If you raise your voice to him, he immediately comes up to you and says he is sorry. He is not allowed on the furniture with us, but I'm sure that he would love to be a snuggle buddy in bed if given a chance. He likes to be in close contact with his people and just thrives on attention.
We are working with obedience training, and he knows sit, come, off, leave it, and will sit and watch me before he gets his food or goes for walks, is housetrained, crate trained, and rides well in a car. We will begin to work on down and stay. He loves to take strolls through the neighborhood and walks very well on a leash. He will need continued exercise to build up his muscle mass. Berrin LOVES his people! He would do best with a companion animal or a stay at home person. If he is paired with a dog, it would be best for him to have a calm laid back buddy versus a young rambunctious pup. He co-exists well with his foster pack, but would not like a young dog up in his face challenging him. He is a live and let live kinda guy, but is starting to like to play with his foster siblings. This cool weather, paired with his proper nutrition and loving care, has added some spunk in his step.
He loves playing with stuffed toys, and has the cutest habit of taking a stuffed toy to bed with him. I absolutely adore this dog! Berrin has endless possibilities if given the guidance and patience. He would do best with a person with GSD experience, and does need a pack leader to feel comfortable and secure. A fenced in yard is preferrable since he needs a place to run and expend his energy. He is neutered, heart worm negative (yay), up to date on all his shots, and is microchipped. He is ready to find his furever home!
