ROCKO ~8 years old. Good with kids and dogs. Cats TBD. Meet Rocko, a distinguished and well-rounded German Shepherd who epitomizes the breed’s best traits: a regal appearance, confident yet calm demeanor, and unwavering loyalty and devotion. Rocko found himself needing a new home through no fault of his own. His owner abandoned him at the pet sitter several months ago and rather than take him to the shelter where he might not fare well, several kind-hearted people took turns hosting him until placement with a rescue could be arranged. GSRA stepped in to provide Rocko with a stable foster home while he awaits his permanent, loving family. This sweet boy is a true gem in the home. He’s fully house-trained, eats and drinks neatly, and doesn’t engage in undesirable behaviors like jumping, counter surfing, or begging. When visitors arrive, he greets them with a friendly tail wag and is always eager for affection—but never demanding. Rocko enjoys being close to his people, following them from room to room. Rocko initiates playtime with the resident dog (who is a third his size) in a fun, well-mannered way that never gets out of hand. At his foster home, his favorite place to lie is in the middle of the intersection of two doorways so he can watch everything going on from any direction. This also allows him to get pets and belly rubs each time a human walks over him. Outside, Rocko is just as well-behaved. He walks well on a leash and enjoys his twice-daily walks, covering 2-3 miles per day—though he’d be just as happy with shorter strolls. He has met several dogs of various sizes during walks and greets them calmly or simply ignores them when instructed. There has been no sign of leash reactivity or aggression toward other animals. Even with the neighbor’s small, barking dog, Rocko remains composed—he’ll sniff the dog through the fence and move on without issue. Rocko may be able to live with a cat. He has been introduced to cats on two occasions; both times he politely sniffed, and then walked away without further interest. At his most recent vet appointment, Rocko was deemed to be in great health aside from some arthritis in his right hip. His lab results were perfect, and he is currently being treated with daily anti-inflammatory medication along with an exercise regimen to improve his muscle tone. It’s clear that Rocko hadn’t received much exercise in the past, but he’s showing rapid improvement in mobility as he gets more active. Rocko is the ideal companion for someone seeking a low-maintenance, easygoing dog or for a first-time German Shepherd owner. If you’re ready to open your heart and home, Rocko would be a truly wonderful addition to your life.
