HATCHETT ~5 years old. Good with kids, dogs, and dog savvy cats. Good with seniors/elderly. Needs a companion animal. GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only Hatchett is a wonderful approximately 5 year old German Shepherd. He was part of a neglect case, so a kindhearted person stepped in to save his life. She had him neutered, had his skin infection cleared up, but could no longer keep him. He was given to someone else who discovered that he had some other health issues. They reached out to GSRA for help, so the team effort was begun. Hatchett was believed to have perianal fistulas, but it turns out that he had an anal mass and infection instead. The mass turned out to be a benign polyp! I believe everyone in the rescue rejoiced in this news, since we had dodged a major bullet. His polyp was removed and his infection has cleared up. Sadly he came up heart worm positive , but the rescue will take care of that! Hatchett is a wonderful sweet dog with a fantastic temperament, once he settles into his new environment. His tail never stops wagging. He gets along well with other dogs, both male and female, in fact, he requires a companion dog since he is not confident enough on his own and takes comfort in having a canine pack. He absolutely loves his human, and wants to be near them all the time. He is a typical velcro dog and wants to be a part of everything that you do. He loves to go for walks and play with toys, and most of all, he loves to be with his person. He is a pretty laid back fellow, but is game for anything, as long as you are with him. He will need a confident, calm pack leader who can show him that there is nothing that he has to worry about. Hatchett will need some time to settle into his new environment He is sensitive, so he is not the type of dog that can transition seamlessly into a new home. Time and patience is key here, so someone will need to be willing to allow this time to settle. He does tend to be very vocal during this time, but after a week or so, will settle down and you will see that happy dog emerge. He will need either a stay at home person or work from home person at this point in his life As he ages and gains confidence, that may change, but for now he needs "his person" around as much as possible. Since he was neglected before, it makes him more velcro to his people. Even though he has had a very rough life for most of his life, he is such a loving boy! Hatchett is house trained, crate trained, and knows some basic commands such as come, sit, off, leave it, and down, and is comfortable using a dog door. He sits for his food and treats, and waits to be told "okay" before taking treats. He is capable of learning so much more if you are willing to invest the time. This is a VERY special boy that will show you endless love and joy. Please consider opening up your heart and home to him More about HatchettGood with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids, Good with Adults, Good for Seniors/Elderly, Very vocal, Requires a yard, Leashtrained, Likes to be in your lap, Obedient, Playful, Affectionate, Eager To Please, Even-tempered, Goofy, Needs a companion animal Special Needs: Hatchett is heart worm positive, but the rescue will take care of that.
